Woodland Park calls itself the City Above the Clouds. At 8,465 feet elevation, tucked into the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains just 18 miles west of Colorado Springs, it earns the name. This is not a tourist town. It’s a real mountain community with excellent restaurants, genuine local character, and access to some of the most beautiful wilderness in Colorado.
Here’s what to do when you’re here.
Get Outside First
Catamount Recreation Area is Woodland Park’s crown jewel. Miles of trails wind through
ponderosa pine forest past two reservoirs with views of Pikes Peak that stop you mid-stride.
On a weekday morning you may have the entire trail system to yourself. Mueller State Park sits 20 minutes southwest and offers 85 miles of trails through aspen groves and pine forest with consistent wildlife sightings — elk, mule deer, and black bears are regular presences.
The Pikes Peak Highway begins 24 minutes from Woodland Park and takes you to the 14,115-foot summit of one of Colorado’s most iconic fourteeners.
Eat and Drink
Well Red Diamond Gastro Pub is Woodland Park’s best dinner. Elevated mountain cuisine and a warm atmosphere that feels genuinely special without being pretentious. Make a reservation.Boards and Barrels is the local favorite for a relaxed evening — great food and the kind of easygoing energy that fits a mountain town perfectly.
The Hungry Bear Restaurant is your breakfast destination. Made-from-scratch biscuits and large portions. Expect a wait on weekends — it’s worth it.
Swiss Chalet on Highway 24 is a Woodland Park institution. Classic diner feel with good honest food and the kind of staff that makes you feel at home.
Stargaze
At 8,465 feet with minimal light pollution, Woodland Park offers some of the best stargazing
in the Colorado Springs region. On a clear night the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye.
Bring a blanket, lie on your back, and let the sky have you.
