Woodland Park sits at the center of some of the best hiking in Colorado. Not the most famous hiking — the crowds haven’t found it yet. The best hiking. The kind where you park your car, walk ten minutes, and feel genuinely alone in the wilderness.
Where the trail doesn’t have a gift shop at the end. Where the only sounds are your own footsteps and whatever the forest is doing.
Here are the trails worth making the drive for.
Catamount Trail System — For All Levels
The Catamount trail system begins two minutes from the center of Woodland Park and offers some of the most accessible and rewarding hiking in Teller County.
The Lower Catamount Reservoir loop is perfect for families and casual hikers — relatively flat, beautiful scenery, and reservoir access for dogs and those who want to linger near water. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours.
The Upper Catamount loop adds elevation and views. From the upper trail you get clear sightlines to Pikes Peak that feel earned in a way that a drive-up viewpoint never does. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours. Both trails are dog-friendly with leashes. Both are accessible from the same trailhead. Both are worth every step.
Mueller State Park — For the Serious Hiker Mueller State Park sits 20 minutes southwest of Woodland Park and contains 85 miles of trails across some of Teller County’s most dramatic terrain.
The Elk Meadow trail offers one of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the park — arrive at dawn or dusk and elk sightings are nearly guaranteed.
The Outlook Ridge trail rewards the effort with panoramic views across the Pikes Peak massif and south toward the Sangre de Cristo range.
Mueller is the kind of park that rewards multiple visits. Each trail reveals a different character of the same landscape.
Pikes Peak Barr Trail — For the Committed
The Barr Trail is the hiking route to the summit of Pikes Peak — 13 miles one way with 7,400 feet of elevation gain. This is not a casual hike. It is one of the most challenging and rewarding day hikes in Colorado for those prepared for it.
Most hikers begin at the Barr Trail trailhead in Manitou Springs — 24 minutes from Woodland Park — before dawn. Summit attempts should be abandoned if afternoon thunderstorms develop. Altitude acclimatization is essential.
For those not ready for the full summit, the Barr Trail to the A-Frame shelter at tree line
offers a spectacular half-day hike without the full commitment.
Rainbow Falls — The Hidden Gem
Few visitors to Woodland Park know about Rainbow Falls. Tucked into a small canyon just off the highway, this short trail leads to a series of waterfalls on Fountain Creek that are genuinely beautiful and almost always uncrowded.
The trail is short — under a mile round trip — and accessible to most fitness levels. It’s the perfect add-on to a morning at Catamount or an afternoon before dinner in town.
Where to Stay
The Catamount Coze House puts you two minutes from the Catamount trailhead and 20
minutes from Mueller State Park. A private sauna on the deck makes returning from a long
hike feel like a reward rather than a collapse.
