Woodland Park Colorado Summer Guide 2026 | What to Expect

Summer in Woodland Park, Colorado is one of Colorado’s best-kept secrets.

While the rest of the state swelters in July heat, Woodland Park sits at 8,465 feet where summer temperatures are pleasant — warm sunny days, cool evenings, and afternoon thunderstorms that roll through with dramatic mountain efficiency and leave the air smelling like pine and rain. Here’s what to expect and how to make the most of it.

The Weather

Summer in Woodland Park means daytime highs typically in the low to mid-70s Fahrenheit.

Evenings cool significantly even in July a light jacket is comfortable after dark. This is not the Colorado of Phoenix-adjacent heat. This is mountain summer.

Afternoon thunderstorms are a reliable feature of Colorado summers, particularly in July and August. They typically develop between noon and 4pm and clear by evening. Plan outdoor activities for morning hours and embrace the dramatic show the storms provide from a safe indoor location.

What’s Open and Accessible

Summer is peak season for Teller County’s outdoor recreation. All trails in Catamount

Recreation Area and Mueller State Park are fully accessible. The Pikes Peak Highway is open to the summit. Eleven Mile Reservoir is at its best for fishing, boating, and paddling.

Wildflowers peak in late June and July across the high meadows Mueller State Park offers some of the most spectacular wildflower displays in the Colorado Springs region.

The Light

Colorado summer light is extraordinary. The combination of elevation, low humidity, and long days produces a quality of light that photographers and painters have been chasing here for over a century. Golden hour lasts longer than it does at sea level. Morning light on the pines is genuinely worth waking up early for.

What to Pack

Layers are essential regardless of season in Colorado. Even in July the temperature difference between midday and midnight can exceed 30 degrees. Pack a warm layer, a rain jacket, and sunscreen the sun at elevation is significantly stronger than at sea level and altitude sickness is possible for visitors coming from low elevations. Hydration matters more than most visitors anticipate. The combination of elevation, dry air, and physical activity accelerates dehydration. Drink more water than you think you need.

Where to Stay

The Catamount Coze House in Woodland Park is particularly special in summer the wraparound deck comes fully alive, the fire pit extends evenings well past dark, and the private sauna provides the perfect end to a long day on the trails.
