Most people drive through Florissant without stopping.
They’re on their way to somewhere else and Florissant appears as a small cluster of buildings along Highway 24 before disappearing in the rearview mirror.
That’s their loss.
Florissant, Colorado is one of the state’s most genuinely beautiful and underrated mountaincommunities. Sitting at 8,200 feet in Teller County, it offers the kind of authentic Colorado experience that more famous destinations have traded away in exchange for crowds and gift shops.
Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument
Eight minutes from Florissant sits one of the most remarkable paleontological sites in North America. Thirty-four million years ago this valley was the site of a lake surrounded by a redwood forest. Volcanic eruptions preserved an extraordinary record of ancient life — insects, seeds, leaves, and massive petrified redwood stumps that still stand in the meadow today.
The monument has 14 miles of trails and rarely feels crowded. Walk slowly here.
Eleven Mile Reservoir
Seventeen minutes from Florissant sits Eleven Mile Reservoir — one of Colorado’s premier fishing destinations. The reservoir covers 3,400 acres surrounded by granite outcroppings and pine forest. Pike, trout, and kokanee salmon draw serious anglers from across the state.
Even if you don’t fish, drive to the reservoir and walk the shoreline.
Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center
Twelve minutes away sits one of Colorado’s most unique attractions — a nonprofit wildlife sanctuary dedicated to wolves, coyotes, and foxes. Tours get you close enough to observe these animals in a way no zoo can replicate. The howling tours at dawn and dusk are extraordinary.
Genuine Solitude
The most valuable thing Florissant offers cannot be listed on any tourism website. It’s quiet.
The kind that has depth to it. Where the only sounds are wind through pines and the occasional elk moving through the meadow. Where the stars at night are so dense they seem impossible.
This is increasingly rare. Florissant still has it.
